Configuring Wireless Access on the Authenticated Wireless Network for Windows XP

Important

Before you begin you must ensure that:

  • your Operating System is fully patched up to date
  • you have the latest drivers for your type of wireless network card
  • you have up to date anti-virus software

Should you have any difficulty in updating your device, please contact the Helpdesk.

The following example shows the wireless configuration for Windows XP

View Networks

Right Click the Wireless Network Icon in the System Tray and select View Available Wireless Networks.

Choose a Wirless Network

Select UOBWLAN and click the Change advanced settings option under Related Tasks...

Under the General Tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button...

Click the options to Obtain an IP address and DNS server address automatically as above. Click OK to return to the General Settings page and select the Wireless Networks Tab...

Click Advanced.

Uncheck Automatically connect to non-preferred networks if selected and Select the Access point (infrastructure) networks only option, then Click the Close button.

Click the Use Windows to configure my wireless settings box if it is unchecked and then click Add... under Preferred networks

Enter UOBWLAN for the Network name (SSID), select WPA2 for Network Authentication.

Select AES for Data encryption, then Click the Authentication tab.

Uncheck Authenticate as a computer, Check Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network and select Protected EAP (PEAP) as the EAP Type. Click Properties to view the EAP properties page

Check Validate server certificate, Check Connect to these servers; scroll down the list and Check GTE CyberTrust Global Root. Select Secured password(EAP-MSCHAP v2) as the authentication method. Click Configure...

Uncheck the box for Automatic Windows logon and Click OK.

Click OK to all the open windows - you have now completed the configuration of your client and should be ready to connect to the UOBWLAN wireless network.
